Heavy Darts?

Practising the small Doubles

I've never considered my 27g darts to be particularly heavy. They certainly look like the ones most other players seem to throw, but over the last few years I've noticed how the 25g+ weights are slowly being phased out.

I switched to Unicorn Hero when Harrows scrapped the 27g option in their excellent Magnum range. Now Unicorn are themselves putting a 25g ceiling on most of their range, including the Heros. I can still find some 27g sets on-line, but these are end of stock and will need to be bought quickly if I want any spares.

I'm sure I'll always be able to get darts in the 27g weight, but my choice will be limited to lower tungsten ratios and not manufactured by Unicorn, Harrows etc. To see what I mean have a look at Darts Corner, and do searches on Darts Steel-Tip / By Weight and see the difference between the 25g offerings and the 27g ones.

The 27's must have been phased out due to declining demand, but it'll be a shame if I'm forced down to 25g to get the type of darts I want. I can really feel the 2g difference.

What type of grip are you looking for? Unicorn still do 27g in their hero, world champion Sigma one and latinum series. If it's a slim barrel with a ringed grip, why not try a Jocky Wilson Pro from Datadart, available in 26g and 28g. I used to play with a 21g Nodor dart (dogs of war) simply because I loved the grip and couldn't find a similar style in a heavier weight. Alas I was rubbish with them, my throw suits a heavy dart. I now chuck a Bulls Phantom grip 26g, good ring grip and nice balance. I wish you could get the dart you want in the correct weight but commercial necessity will always eliminate the less viable weights. Sometimes, regrettably, you have to just shrug the shoulders and try a completely different style of dart sometimes.

Either that or write a stinging letter of compliant to the manufacturers, it probably won’t work but it’ll make you feel better.

Hi DST, many thanks for the detailed scomment. The grip is actually not that important to me as I've used shark and ringed with equal comfort. I don't seem to do well with the smoother finishes though.

They mostly need to be 5cm in length, weigh 27g, and be 90%+ tungsten, so I'm sure to find something.

Hero would be fine, but Unicorn's new catalogue definately shows they now just go up to 25g, so the availability of 27g may be just the stock the stores hold?

The Datadarts would be good to try, so thanks for the steer.

My current set of 26g Heros in the ordinary finish (not Latinum like my spare set) are doing well for me, so I'll just have to really look after them. On the picture on here from June 17th 2009 you can see how even when they take some damage it seems to improve the grip.

Hi! I'm Grant. I live in Seoul, Korea and I'm with the Seoul International Dart League. I was just browsing around on the web and I found your site. It looks really great. Shoot well.

Hi Ton180, great to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words and I hope you're enjoying your game over there. I've had a look at your pictures on SIDL and it seems like a great scene.

Thanks. I've been in Korea for 15 years teaching. I've played darts since 2005 here and gotten involved as an officer of the dart league for the past 2 years. Myabe you or anyone here can help me out. Do you have any suggestions for awards? We have given glass beer mugs, crystal awards. We are trying to do something new. Any ideas?

That's a tough one. I've always liked the boards with past winners that you see at golf clubs etc. I think pepole would really value getting a place on one of those and it would be a great way to document the club's history.

Actually we do a lot.We provide a bunch of awards for overall season of 1st and 2nd place. The bar gets a plaque which has the team name, bar name, and players name. That stays at their bar forever. Playoff 1st and 2nd and the bars get a banner with team name, bar name, players name. It is a little bigger than a telephone book. Each person gets an award which has team name, bar name, SIDL logo and players name. The plaques and the banners are fine. We need new ideas for individual awards. I'll send a picture of a banner next time and maybe you could post it.
